Update + (Half) a Watching Post

I've not been around so much again, because I had to go out and have a filling amongst other things, and ME/CFS and anaesthetic do not play well together. The rest of the time, when I had energy, in fannish things, I have been mainly focused on making sure I get my [community profile] yuletide fic typed up. Anyway, as of yesterday, I have a first draft and am not too far off a bus pass version even (\o/), so I shall try and be a bit less faily at keeping up around here again.

I had half a watching post done, and it was already quite long actually, so I will just post that here:

Some more summer watching! This isn't the order I watched them in, but I made my way through two more cosy crime series, and some of Jeremy Northam's remaining CV.

The two BBC cosies were Ludwig starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, which was very good although an odd mix of tone that is exactly encapsulated by the two leads. Some parts of Ludwig felt like the kind of tense, proper crime drama with bent coppers and the like in which you might expect to find AMM and others were more of an outright comedy than most, as seems only right with David Mitchell. It was a strong entry, though! David Mitchell is a reclusive puzzle-setter ("Ludwig"), John, whose identical twin brother James is a police detective who has vanished. His sister-in-law Lucy manages to prise John out of his house to come and help - by pretending to John. Cue John getting a) extremely stressed by all of this and b) distracted by the need to solve the murders that he's sent to deal with, all the while trying to find out why James has disappeared and help out Lucy and his nephew.

Anyway, there should be a s2, with hopefully less stress for John helping the police as a consultant now, rather than trying to pretend to be his twin brother and panicking a lot. I look forward to seeing how that goes.

Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders have been on my radar for a while because people kept mentioning them, so nearing the end of the summer of the cosies, I thought, why not go for broke, and watched it too. These were really great! They were one serialised mystery per series, rather than case of the week, but Lesley Manville is crime editor Susan Ryeland, whose star crime writer gets murdered. In the course of trying to find the missing chapter of his otherwise complete last manuscript, she inadvertantly winds up on the trail of his killer. The really fun/clever thing about this series is that as she reads the last novel, we follow the fictional detective Atticus Pünd in his investigations, which parallel hers and which are a pastiche of a golden age detective series. Occasionally, she imagines discussing the murder with him, so they meet in dreamlike sequences. Tim McMullan as Pünd is really great - I hadn't come across him before, and it's a lovely performance. Conleth Hill is also fun as the late Alan Conway. Moonflower Murders follows the same pattern, as someone else has noted Alan Conway's spiteful tendency to put real things he oughtn't into his books and pays Susan to investigate the parallels between an earlier book in the series and a death at their hotel.

There's supposed to be a third series to come, so I'll look forward to it, although I understand that it's supposed to have a different writer (as in not Alan Conway in-narrative, not irl - they're all adapted by Anthony Horowitz who wrote the original books), and we'll see how that goes. But it was really unusual and fun.

OC Social Network, But Also...

So I was recently made aware of this little thing
https://www.ocsocialnetwork.com/

It is a Mobile-Only service at this time, and while I tend to steer clear of services that are mobile-only, I have made an exception for this because of how unique it is in it's offering. The last time any service had anything like this, was a long forgotten OC resource service that I forgot the name of. But each OC account was it's own profile which gave you the ability to make blog posts as your OC. Toyhouse has the ability to post as OCs but lacks the social media front that allows you to run and manage a social media presence as the character which is sliiightly different.

So I've just made an account there and as one would expect of a mobile app, it is pretty restrictive in what it permits. Also, you cannot create an account with an email, you have to use one of those oauth account creation things and currently they only let you set up with a Google account. This is also something that I find to be a personal deterrent but my interest in the novelty won me over in this case, but I know for others it would be a deal-breaker so thus I wanted to make note of that.

The service itself is pretty simple, the TOS is pretty boiler plate (and has an arbitration clause FYI), but it's early in it's life so we'll see if it sinks or floats in time. For the moment, it's a fun character exercise to write a profile as though the character were explaining themselves. There's not too many features, you can post and share images on posts, use tags, block tags, block profiles, and it has some sort of 'daily wrapped' thing that gives you a summary of what you wrote and how you interacted. It's very AI summary data scraping but make of that what you will. Mostly, I'm just interested in the environment it offers and the writing exercise that provides.

I had mentioned this service and some of it's dealbreakers to others and in the course of conversation it dawned on me that this is exactly the kind of thing that would benefit from a federated social media service.

The biggest problem I've had with a lot of federated platforms is that either the platform, or their users, tout them as a 'replacement' for large centralized services, not understanding that there are benefits to centralization that federation cannot replace such as optics and reach. They function best when they are played to their strengths and those strengths are when they're used as a vector for a niche community with the option to let others outside of the community peer in if they want. A social media platform where it is expected that everyone signed in is playing in-character is exactly the kind of thing that would play with a federated service to its strengths.

It is an island unto itself, which is important especially if you want to make an environment that a specific kind of role play that everyone knows and partakes in. The use of the local feed would help keep this facade vs the pitfalls of making a character profile on a centralized service like tumblr. If other islands would like to watch the shenanigans they can opt in to do so without making an account on the service. Being on it's own island can also set the 'rules of engagement' from those outside the island, and individual accounts can choose to participate with that or not.

I certainly don't have the time or means to run such a service, but I'm putting the thought out there for someone else to see that might have the means to host such a thing, because it would be very fun.

due South: Ghost Song by exeterlinden

Fandom: due South
Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Diefenbaker, Victoria
Rating: author's rating is ?NC-17 for angst and violent imagery. I'd rate it Mature.
Length: 9998
Content Notes: see rating note above. No AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: exeterlinden on AO3, exeterlinden on DW
Themes: Mystery and Suspense, Mythical Creatures: werewolves, Angst with a happy ending, Friends to lovers, AU: fork in the road

Summary: It appears on the fire escape one late evening in early winter, big and dark and silent.

Reccer's Notes: This gripping and spooky story starts with a different version of Fraser's chase and snowy huddling with Victoria, then segues into current (AU) canon with Ray Kowalski baffled by the big, black, mysterious, wolflike dog that intermittently appears on his fire escape, trying to get in, sometimes with Dief trying to chivvy it away. Also, Fraser's been distancing himself, and when he finds out about the dog's visits he's most unhappy. Things get weirder, and Fraser gets weirder, and then Victoria returns to push them all into crisis. The ending took me by surprise, and I liked it a lot! An excellent read.

Age: 36

I mostly post about: nothing in particular right now, i'm trying to get back into using this site, i think i'm really over social media in general and i miss LJ stuff haha BUT mostly rp doodles probably, and some artwork now that most sites are making it near unbearable to post drawings that are lgbt romance. Anything n everything

My hobbies are: drawing, writing, rp, world building, music archiving (usually old obscure osts for various anime n rpgs) gaming, watching anime, reading Manga (I need to read more books... 😭) d&d/tabletop, cooking, sewing, crafting idk do a lot of things but I'm not necessarily good at many hahai

My fandoms are: i don't really consider myself "in fandoms" I just sort of like what I like and make merch for it sometimes, I rarely interact in fan content so I'm not rly a big fic reader, I'm much more in the oc crowd than making fan content. BUT here's some stuff I love: record of lodoss war, weathering continent, RG Veda, Saint seiya, magi labyrinth of magic, land of the lustrous, dungeon meshi, Slayers, lunar: sss&eb, mana series, final fantasy, Lufia, -- really lots of old fantasy anime n games from the 60s to late 90s with the rare occasional newer thing

I'm looking to meet people who: are chill and around my age, anyone who's interested in original characters n anything listed above

My posting schedule tends to be: unsure yet but I'd like it to be every day if I can manage it

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: I guess just general hateful content, which I don't see happening often. Other than that I am NOT a fan of anti/proshipper wank I am frankly too old for it. Both sides get on my nerves and I will typically unfollow ppl who start engaging in that arguing.

Before adding me, you should know: as related to above; I am a believer of fiction being fiction and separate from reality. I don't really care what people choose to write or create. (we can point out real life patterns in themes chosen, but that doesn't make any of it real or inherently harmful) However, I like to be critical of media n can sound harsh about it sometimes, but I'm never going to tell anyone not to like something just bc I don't care for it.

O hai there :)

I have always found nice people through this community, so I thought I would give it another try ;)

Name:
Tina
Age: old 37 as of May 10th
I mostly post about: My daily life, thoughts that go through my head, the occasional meme/survey, and I often post pictures. However, I will always put the latter under a cut if there's more than three, so I don't clog up your flists too much.
My hobbies are: Reading, taking walks, hanging out with friends, listening to music/podcasts, doing jigsaw puzzles, taking pictures, cuddling my cat, travelling (when time and money allow), going to concerts (see previous brackets xD), doing logic puzzles & word searches, learning new things. I used to love adult colouring books and would like to get back into them at some point.

My fandoms are: I don't have fandoms as such - I mean, I like things but I don't participate in "fannish activities" like watching/reading fanfiction or the like. I have nothing against the former or anything and even enjoy reading the occasional fic my friends post if I am at all familiar with the fandom, it's just never been something I was particularly interested in doing myself.

I will list some favourites here though, if anyone is interested to see what we have in common.

Musical artists: A Day to Remember, Bring me the Horizon, Florence & the Machine, Taylor Swift, The Warning, The Last Dinner Party, Death by Romy, Tegan & Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Freya Ridings, Wanda, Emilie Autumn, Amy Shark, Great Big Sea, Alan Doyle, Shanneyganock, Derina Harvey Band, Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo, Kellie Loder, Bodh'aktan &many more. I probably even forgot some! I love music and can be found listening to anything from Pop or Rock to Metal, Goth or Metalcore to Rap, depending on my mood. The only genres I don't like much are Jazz & Classical Music but even there I can enjoy the occasional song.

Books: Lolita (V. Nabokov), Middlesex (J. Eugenides), The Wrong Boy (W. Russell), The Future of Another Timeline (A. Newitz), The Shock Of The Fall (N. Filer), Mio my Son (A. Lindgren), The Little Prince (A. de St. Exupéry), The Kronoberg trilogy (E.A. Sund), The Dept. Q series (J. Adler-Olsen), The Deathless series (N. Forna), The Peculiar Children series (R. Riggs), The Cider House Rules (J. Irving), Mrs. Dalloway (V. Woolf), Orlando (V. Woolf), We'll Prescribe You A Cat (S. Ishida), The Kangaroo Chronicles (M.-U. Kling), Animal Farm (G. Orwell), Migrations (C. McConaghy), Once There Were Wolves (C. McConaghy), The Hunger Games series (S. Collins), To The Bright Edge Of The World (E. Ivey), American Gods (N. Gaiman), A Song Of Ice & Fire series (G.R.R. Martin)...and I am probably forgetting half of them here, as well!

I used to be a huge Potterhead but ever since it came out what kind of person JKR is, I cannot read or watch the series with a good conscience anymore, or spend any money on HP-related things. I don't judge anyone who still likes the series though, it is just not for me anymore.

Movies: Anything with Meryl Streep ♥ , Godzilla movies, trashy horror movies in general (think creature feature/animal horror ^^), Despicable Me & Minions series*, The Secret Life Of Pets, Creep 1 & 2, Kinsey, Forrest Gump, If These Walls Could Talk II, Imagine Me & You, Smile, Life Of Brian, Guardians Of The Galaxy 1 & 2, Inside Out 1 & 2, A Simple Favor, Get Out, Escape Room, The Silence Of The Lambs... I confess that I am not a huge movie watcher, although I have been getting more into them over the past two years or so.

*apparently that makes me a cringy boomer. Oh well.

TV shows: Law & Order:SVU, Stranger Things, Wednesday, Son Of A Critch (though I have yet to see the latest season). I will also watch the occasional episode of Is It Cake? when the mood strikes. In the past I've enjoyed Pushing Daisies, Boston Public, Call the Midwife, Zoo (anyone remember that one?), Starling and Republic Of Doyle. As you see, I am not a huge TV watcher either *blush*.

I always welcome recommendations of any kind! :)

I'm looking to meet people who: are kind, empathetic, funny, open-minded and understanding. While it's cool if we have stuff in common, it's not a necessity to me - a lot of the best friends I've made on here have completely different interests. In fact, I love getting to know what kinds of things other people like and maybe even give that song/band/movie/book/whatever a try myself :) we can inspire each other!

My posting schedule tends to be: I try to post at least twice a week - I do a "What Are You Reading Wednesday" post (guess on which day? LOL) every week, and usually catch up on daily life every Sunday. Random posts may happen too ;)

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Discrimination/intentional bigotry of any kind. I say "intentional" because we all have subconscious prejudices and mess up once in a while and as long as we're open to learn from it, that's okay. Extreme black and white-thinking on any issue - I value critical thinking.

Before adding me, you should know: I have a few mental health issues, so my journal might not be puppies and sunshine all the time. So if you are a person who can't take "too much negativity" on their flist, I might not be the right friend for you. That's not meant to sound rude, it's rather that I want to feel free to let out my feelings in my journal without worrying where the line crosses into "too much" if that makes sense?

The former can also mean that I sometimes don't comment or read as much as I want to, same applies to when life gets busy. I always try to be there as much as I can though, and I always come back and catch up eventually!

Lastly, I am neurodivergent, most likely on the autism spectrum somewhere (just still undiagnosed because it is very difficult to even get an appointment for an assessment where I live :(). I say that because it means I sometimes take things too literally or may misunderstand something, or don't see all the nuances of what you wrote. So if I ever say something that comes across as rude, or put my foot in my mouth, please do give me the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't my intention to be offensive and give me a chance to explain myself. I swear I never mean harm ♥ and I will do my best to make up for any I do cause.

I am looking forward to meeting new people from all walks of life ♥ please do comment here or on my Friends Only Post before adding me though, thank you.

Been thinking about how, I used to compose my entries in Semagic all the time, but I hadn't been using it for ages because the setup was weird and there were some other jank. But it's been some years, and they're STILL updating Semagic, now I've gone through the effort to set it back up again aaaaannnddd... this actually may be easier for me to update my journal.

The thing with the web-side posting is that I can only have one draft at a time so I get into these ruts where I don't write a lot of the big stuff because I can't bounce between that and little posts so I get stuff stuck in my head that I feel like I 'can't write yet' and thus and up not posting at all.  I used to bounce between posts all the time when I used semagic regularly. Aaalllsoooo, Semagic has a queue system so I can spread out some of my posts so I'm not feeling like I'm bombarding everyone once. Since I have a habit of getting an idea of writing all sorts of things after I make the first post...

Honestly, for anyone getting used to dreamwidth I recommend using this. Just remember to generate an API key. (more on the Dreamwidth website) It may be a lot more accessible to people not familiar with HTML as this gives means of a real WYSIWYG interface for formatting. I should probably add these things to my Tumblr's Guide to Dreamwidth post on the Tumblrss..

acronym abuse

Too many people are more willing to use esoteric tone tags than they are to spell out their stupid acronyms.
I've griped about Tone Tags before: https://armaina.dreamwidth.org/793839.html and there's a lot of overlap of frustration. Where people are using shortened or acronym versions of a thing and just assume everyone will know it and an key is never provided.

Obviously I use acronyms all the time in the form of things like PHP, HTML, I know these are acronyms, and I rarely define these, so like, that's not lost on me. In those cases, the acronym IS the word people know. (PHP: Personal Home Page, HTML: Hypertext Transfer Protocol, HTML: Hypertext Markup Language) This gripe of mine applies to acronym usage where you can't easily find the meaning because it's fandom related or brings up too many hits on a search.

It's one thing on a platform with a tight character restriction, I get it. But on places that do not have that issue I'm getting so tired of trying to decipher people's code.

I get people talking all about accessibility and what not but never have I seen the topic of un-defined acronyms broached.

Just once! spell out the thing you're using an acronym for! So that it's clear about the other acronyms after the fact! It's getting to the point that I can list multiple things for a set of acronyms, and sometimes 'context clues' are not enough to discern which thing is which.
